Fun with Nursery Rhymes!

So, it's finally time for the unit that I look forward to all year long...Nursery Rhymes!  I know it may sound silly, but the kids LOVE this unit!  They always beg for us to sing/say the nursery rhymes with them throughout the day and there are so many activities to do with the rhymes.  

We started the week by putting Humpty Dumpty back together.  My little sweeties each had an egg-shaped paper and they cut it into three pieces.  Then, they used band-aids to put Humpty back together.  Unwrapping the band-aids and problem solving how to use them to hook the pieces together were both a little tricky, but they figured it out!  After they fixed Humpty up, they drew a face on him and glued the rhyme onto the back.

Then we started on another Humpty Dumpty art project.  The kids started by sponge painting bricks for the wall.  Then, they cut out the pieces for Humpty Dumpty.  We finished the week by putting it all together and drawing his face.  

During circle time we acted out Little Miss Muffet.  Each cutie had a turn and we said their name instead of Miss Muffet.  This was a big hit!  

We also matched  uppercase letters with Little Jack Horner.  

And, counted sheep with Little Bo Peep and then decided who had more.  

Last week in my post about our Pizza Unit I promised that I'd show you their finished Pizza makers.  They crack me up and are definitely going to be a new staple in our future pizza units!

Pizza Fun!

Last week our theme was pizza and the kids loved it!  They loved getting to tell everyone their favorite kind of pizza (lots of cheese lovers, of course) and sharing where they like to go for pizza.  It's always fun doing units that the kids have a connection with and prior experiences with.

We started the week by building a paper pizza that we cut into fourths to make into a puzzle.  Things were going great until I drew the lines on the back and told them to cut their pizza.  They were shocked that I would ask them to cut up their artwork!  After some convincing, they started cutting.  It was a little tricky cutting through 3-4 layers of paper, but they persevered!

After they cut them apart, they had to reassemble the pizza before we gave them a baggie to put it in.

We also made a pizza man holding a pizza.  We found the idea at Tiny Scholars Preschool Academy. 

Here's one of the finished pizza men!  I didn't get a picture of the rest, but they're going up on a bulletin board, so I'll post a picture next week.  

During circle time, we had a paper pizza cut into pieces with action words written on the back.  Each cutie picked a piece of pizza and then the class followed the direction.  This type of game is always a big hit and a great activity to do when they're starting to get a little wiggly!  

We also had three different sized pizzas that we put in order from smallest to largest.

On Wednesday we made biscuit pizzas!  The kids pressed out their biscuit, spooned on pizza sauce, added cheese and topped it with a pepperoni, if they wanted.  

While we waited for the pizzas to bake we played I Have, Who Has Colors.  They're getting really good at this game!  I start it by saying "I have (the color at the top of my card), who has (the color at the bottom of my card)."  Whoever has that color at the top of their card calls out "I have (the color I called), who has (the color at the bottom of their card)."  This continues until the all of the colors have been called.

Then it was time to dig in!  

We finished the week by having a pizza party with Ms. Kellie and Ms. Suzanne's classes.  They were so excited to have Little Caesar's pizza at school!
