Goldilocks and the Three Bears

After spending two weeks on nursery rhymes, we moved into fairy tales.  Last week we focused on Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We read several versions of the story and during art time, we made the three bears.  We still have some finishing touches to add, but here are a few pictures of the beginning of the project.

A few weeks ago, we were lucky enough to have Matt Glover come to our school for a training.  He has written several books about encouraging writing in young children.  During the training, he did a mini-lesson in our classroom.  I was so proud of the kids!  They were very attentive and well behaved and loved making their own books!

While they were working, Matt met with a few of the kids and gave them a few ideas to try in their writing.

This cutie took off with it and added all kinds of words to her book!

The kids loved having him look at their work!

Last week we worked on drawing self portraits and writing names.

We also had a Young Audiences performance.  They incorporated math with music and the kids had a lot of fun!

But, the biggest thing to happen last week was completely unplanned!  One of the kids noticed that there were two ducks by our back door.  We all had so much fun watching them!  It was a male and a female, so we think they were trying to build a nest.

We ended the week with our Walk-a-Thon fundraiser.  We walked a few laps around the bus lane and it was a perfect day to be outside!

And, the popsicles at the end were pretty great, too!

It was a fun week and I can't believe the school year is almost over!

Nursery Rhymes 2015

It's finally time for our annual Nursery Rhyme Unit!  This is always my favorite unit because the kids love learning the rhymes and retelling them.  Here are links to what we did last year (and if you want to see how little and cute they were):  Fun With Nursery Rhymes and More Fun With Nursery Rhymes.

We started the week making sheep for Mary Had a Little Lamb and Little Bo Peep.  Each sweetie painted white circles onto green paper.  After they were dry, they added legs and a face.  We found the idea at Love, Laughter and Learning in Prep.

Then, we made an Itsy Bitsy Spider project.  The morning class just assembled the craft and the afternoon class cut out some of the pieces.  We found this idea at The Vintage Umbrella.

I love how different they each are and how they reflect each cutie's personality.

At table time, we sorted shapes.  Each square had a pail (like Jack and Jill) with an object on it.  The kids did a great job sorting them!

Next up was Jack Be Nimble.  We said the rhyme and each sweetie had a turn to be Jack and jump over the candlestick.

Then, during art they made their own candlestick and added the nursery rhyme.

Our last project was Hey Diddle Diddle.  The kids had so much fun putting this together!  Once again, the morning just assembled and the afternoon cut out most of the pieces.  They had lots to cut out, but did an awesome job!

I can't tell you how many times we sang Hey Diddle Diddle while working on this activity!

I am so proud of their work!  They did a great job!

We ended the week by making our version of apple pies, since many of the rhymes talk about pies.  Each cutie pressed sugar cookie dough into a mini-muffin tin.  We added a spoonful of apple pie filling and baked them.

And then, we ate them!!

We also celebrated this sweet girl's birthday!

It was a fun two weeks!

Easter Bunny's Visit

Man, have I gotten behind!  The last time I blogged was before Easter and in this post, I told you that I had forgotten to send the kids bunny ears home.  Well, the day after Easter, we took these cute pictures and the Easter Bunny visited our school.

Are these kids not adorable?!
