A little of this and that

It's been a crazy last few weeks!  I'm going to do my best to get caught up in one post!  Two weeks ago we had a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom unit.  

We practiced counting to 20 using ten frames.

We made our own coconut tree and the kids wrote their name on the tree.

We had fun dancing to the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom song.

So, our school has a Family Fun Night every year.  It's like our school carnival and it's completely free. We have an art auction and each class makes a project to auction off.  Creating our project has taken up every bit of our free time over the last week!  But, it was totally worth it!  I'd been researching ideas on Pinterest and found this idea from Oh Boy 4th Grade.

Mary and I decided this was the project for us, so we went right to work!  We gave each of my sweeties a piece of construction paper and watercolors, then put them to work painting it however they wanted. 

When they were dry, I used a yellow marker to divide their paper into thirds.  Then, they cut out the rays.  We used the center piece that each cutie cut out.

Over the next few days, we let each sweetie paint in the sun and sky.  I painted the outline of the sun, but they did everything else!

We printed the word "Shine" onto construction paper and we had them each paint a few letters. We painted several sets for each class and then chose a letter or two from each set.

Then, Mary and I laid it all out, glued it down, and sealed it.  I'm so proud of how they turned out!  

Here's a look at the other items in the art auction.  It's always a big hit and so fun to see what each class made.

We had a great turn out for Family Fun Night and I think everyone had a good time.  

Despite all the work on our art auction project, we still had time to practice identifying numbers and counting.

We also played a modified version of Go Fish.

And we went on a letter hunt!  I found the idea at No Time For Flash Cards.  We hid letters around the school and as we found a letter they folded it back until all of the letters were found.  They loved this activity and really impressed me with their letter identification skills!

And, in completely unrelated news, my sister is getting married this summer.  I'm the maid of honor, so with the help of lots of great ladies, we hosted her bridal shower last weekend.  It was a lot of work leading up to it, but we had a great day!  Here's a picture of me with my mom, Janet, and sister, Anna.

We had the shower at my good friend's house and she was kind enough to let us take over and decorate almost every inch of her basement to fit our theme.
